After buying the physical book and loving it because of its graphics (which is what the book is about) I bought the kindle version to be able to look at the images on a screen only to find out that in the kindle version the images are too small and because it favours reading, the texts are much more overwhelming than the more interesting graphics. For a 5/5 book, this kindle version coul very possibly be a 0/5 if it wasn't because the texts are indeed interesting, but just as a Photograph book is about the images, this book should be as well
This is a great premise for a book– a kind of utilitarian, X-ray vision to study iconic examples of architecture. Some of these buildings you'll know well, but you'll be able to see them from the inside out. There's something mesmerizing about these drawings, akin to the fascination of see-through books of the human body– the invisible man– with layers showing arteries, muscles, veins, etc. Not least, the drawings are lucid and consistent, allowing an unfiltered transparency that is uniform regardless of the individual building.
Architecture is about spaces. Section is one of the tools to analize it and to give the builders an understanding of the project. Analyzing the tool that is used to analyze the project to me feels unnecessarily overdone. Following this methodology one ends being not an analyst of architectural qualities but an analyst of architectural drawings.I thought the book would be about good practices in the drawing of sections and not a proposal of reading of drawings. If you are an student of architecture you are not going to find anything else that is going to be taught to you at university. In my opinion even it could be not a good choice because you are going to find that so much emphasis into the idea of sections seldom translates that impact to its corresponding spaces; in other cases traslucid traditional models or virtual tours can be better tools in pursue of the architectonic quality of space. My suggestion is to read Ching's manuals.Despite the previous words my disagreement is only about the idea; the execution is masterful. I enjoyed much the sections of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings; the theorical framework is very well researched and each drawing is very professional.
For a book about the illustrating of building sections, the quality of illustrations in the Kindle edition are worse than useless. They are thumbnail in size to start with but the resolution is so low that zooming in results in nothing but a blurred image. Terrible.
I wanted this book digitally after browsing the print copy. But behold, the images are THUMBNAILS in the digital version. I feel so ripped-off; pardon the section pun.The writing is of course easy to understand and descriptive, but nothing like the visuals to really get the point across.
Manual of Section is a thorough study of an important component of architectural structure design. I am learning so much and have fostered an in-depth appreciation of what is critically necessary for designing and bringing to reality beautiful spaces that can elevate physical, visual and sensory perceptions.
An amazing new look at familiar buildings. I already new something about every building in the book, but the new way of looking at each taught me something about each one. It's a useful teaching tool to explain sectional spacial relationships and it's really beautiful.
A very good resource book for architectural students. Feeling even stronger in that way after I had Lewis's lecture about sections and all the works they've done for this book.
